How to Get Qualified for the Olympics

The Olympic Games (officially Games of the XXXII Olympiad) in Tokyo, Japan is scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2019. We cannot wait to see our favorites compete for gold medals. However, there are so many preparation for the athletes that outsiders do not know nor understand.

Let us explain how teams of waterpolo get qualified to compete at the Olympic Games. The qualification for the Olympic men’s water polo tournament allocated twelve (12) teams quota spots for: the host, the top team in the FINA World League, the top 2 teams in the FINA World Championships, five continental Olympic qualification tournament champions, and the top 3 teams at an Olympic qualifying tournament.

The qualification for the Olympic women’s water polo tournament allocated ten (10) teams quota spots for: the host, the top team in the FINA World League, the top team in the FINA World Championships, five continental Olympic qualification tournament champions, and the top 2 teams at an Olympic qualifying tournament.

  1. If the host country has a team, it is automatically qualified.
  2. The best team in the 2019 FINA World League gets qualified for the Olympics. The men’s event will be in Belgrade, Serbia between 18 – 23 June 2019, and the women’s event will be in Budapest, Hungary between 4-7 June 2019.
  3. The top (two) team(s) in the 2019 FINA World Championships qualify for the Olympics. This will be held in Gwangju, South Korea between 12–28 July 2019.
  4. One team from each continental qualifying tournament qualifies for the Olympics.
