Hungary will host the LEN European championships in all aquatic sports in 2020.
What will be different from other LEN events is that the events will not be hosted at the same time. The schedule for waterpolo is 12-26 January, the swimming, diving and synchronized swimming championships will be on 4-17 May, and the open water events on 16-21 June. The European Open Water Swimming Championships will be on 16-21 June 2020 in Balatonfüred. If all stakeholders agree, the first ever European High Diving Championships might also be staged on 19-20 August 2020.
“Budapest is a sports-loving city and Hungary is a sports-loving nation, which they have proved by organizing several excellent events. We maintain continuous and high-level cooperation with the Hungarian association,” Mr. Barelli said. The success of the 2020 European Championships is almost guaranteed as Hungary hosted the World Aquatic Championships in 2017.
Hungary paid 49 billion Forints for construction and infrastructure for hosting the 2017 FINA World Aquatics Championships, though the budget would recover about 10 billion Forints in the form of VAT. Next year the same arena, Duna Aréna will be the home for these upcoming events.
