They met 6 times at the Europeans, and the Serbs lead 6-0. Their last clash was in Belgrade four years ago in the Semifinals.
This is the first time since 1999 that Serbia hasn’t reached the Semifinals at the European Championships. Despite Serbia losing to Spain in the quarterfinals, Serbia is still known as one of the best water polo teams.
Serbia has already qualified for the Tokyo Olympics, and throughout the Europeans, it was obvious that the team was preparing to win in Japan rather than earning another European title. However, they still did their best to win the match against Greece to play for 5th place.
During the first quarter, Serbia was leading, then Greece took over in the second for a split second. The score was close, but Serbia’s win was secured from the third quarter, which confirms that they will play for 5th place against Italy, and Greece will play against Russia for 7th place.
Serbia – Greece 12-9 (3-3, 3-2, 4-2, 2-2)
