As the Olympics got postponed to 2021, and the World Championships needs to happen after the biggest event, FINA has decided that the 2021 Fukuoka World Championships will be held in 2022 instead. The event will take place between 13-29 May, 2022 in the Japanese city.
FINA President Julio Maglione said,
After liaising with the relevant stakeholders and receiving feedback from them, we have no doubt that the decision taken will provide the best possible conditions for all participants at the Championships. We look forward to witnessing the world’s best aquatic athletes from around the world competing in the city of Fukuoka in 2022. At a time of unprecedented uncertainty, FINA hopes the announcement of these dates will allow for some clarity in planning for all concerned.”
This means that only the Olympics will be in 2021, and 2022 will the the busiest calendar with the World Champs in the spring, then the European Water Polo Championships in Split, Croatia in the summer. The Asian Games are also scheduled in September.
