World League Prelims – Seven of the eight teams are set for the Europa Cup

No favourites made mistakes in Tuesday’s round of the World League European prelims and with these results seven of the eight teams are set for the Europa Cup.

Hungary (Group A), Greece, Spain (Group B), Italy, Montenegro (Group C), Serbia and Croatia (Group D) all secured their places in the Europa Cup. The only one remaining place will be taken by either Russia or Germany.

Group A

Hungary was up by 5 (6-1) in the middle of the second quarter, but the Russians managed to climb back and stay closer, they even came back to 9-8 with 4 minutes remaining, but they could not equalize. In the other game of the group, Malta stayed close to Germany for about 10 minutes, but then the Germans pulled away and won the game. 

In the last round on the 12th or March, Germany will host Russia for the final battle to advance to the Europa Cup.

Hungary – Russia 10-8 (4-1, 2-2, 3-2, 1-3)

Malta – Germany 9-18 (3-5, 3-4, 1-5, 2-4)

  1. Hungary 5 games – 14 points
  2. Russia 5 – 9
  3. Germany 5 – 7
  4. Malta 5 – 0

 

Group B

Greece and Spain both won confidently and they secured their places in the Final 8. The Greeks had a stellar second half with only one conceded goal, while the Spaniards had an all-out performance with a final score of 17-2. 

Netherlands – Greece 6-12 (3-3, 2-3, 1-3, 0-3)

Spain – Ukraine 17-2 (1-0, 5-1, 4-1, 7-0)

  1. Spain 5 games – 12 points
  2. Greece 5 – 12
  3. Netherlands 5 – 6
  4. Ukraine 5 – 0

 

Group C

Italy fought a really hard battle against France, but to be noted, they were without Figlioli, Iodice and Renzuto. Echenique scored half of the Italians goals in this contest to secure their first place in Group C.

France – Italy 4-6 (1-2, 2-2, 1-2, 0-0)

  1. Italy 4 games – 10 points
  2. Montenegro 3 – 5
  3. France 4 – 0

 

Group D

Serbia won against Romania confidently without their best squad. They were up 6-1 in the second quarter and rolled to victory. Serbia and Croatia will clash in the last round to decide first place in the group. 

Serbia – Romania 13-6 (3-1, 4-1, 4-2, 2-2)

  1. Serbia 3 games – 8 points
  2. Croatia 3 – 7
  3. Romania 3 – 0

The Europa Cup will take place in Zagreb between the 5th and 7th of April. The four best teams from the Europa Cup will qualify for the World League Super Final.
